What is the Ideal Drive Roll Design for Welding?

All You Know to Know About Drive Roll Design

Rough Surface Finish

Shavings are from a rough surface finish. With a groove diameter similar to that of the wire, the hard steel drive roll will smear the aluminum wire leaving short, semi-circle shavings and allow aluminum to build up on the drive roll.

Improper Design

Shavings resemble steel wool. Wire exits with two continuous indentations which can be felt or seen when it is twisted.

Correct Design

R1
R2
Ideal drive roll shown has radii which do not cut the wire and the surface should be highly polished.
R1 = wire diameter x 0.6
R2 = wire diameter x 0.3

No Shavings Present
