Crackle. Snap. Pop. Curse. These are the sounds of a welder tripping a circuit breaker. Virtually every welding operator who has used a high-wattage tool on a 115V line knows the frustration that occurs when a breaker trips to protect the lines from overheating. For the garage welder, it means a trip to the basement to reset the breaker. For a professional welder, it might mean grinding out the cold spot that occurred when the power cut out. For a welder in the field, it might mean climbing down from a structure.
Most portable welders that run on 115V primary (whether solely on 115V or that accept both 115V/230V power) are designed to deliver their rated output on a 20-amp breaker. Unfortunately, most household-type 115V breakers only have 15-amp (or weaker) service. As a result, trying to run a welder at the top end of its output often trips the breaker.
To work without interruption, the operator may need to turn down the amperage and/or step down one electrode diameter for optimized arc performance. However, if they’re using a Renegade VOLT ES 200i battery welding machine, they could also engage the unique AMP+ Hybrid Mode.
The battery-powered Renegade VOLT has multiple operating modes: it works on pure battery power, connects to 115V and 230V primary power, and it has the AMP+ Hybrid Mode. This unique mode works when connected to 115V primary to supplement wall power with battery power to prevent nuisance tripping. The only trick to taking advantage of AMP+ Hybrid Mode? You need to turn it on.
To operate Renegade VOLT on 115V primary power, simply plug it in and turn it on; the machine will automatically sense the voltage. Next, push the main encoder knob to enter the main menu, choose the settings sub-menu and scroll to “breaker size.” The default setting is 20 amps, but there are options for 10-, 16- and 25-amp breakers as well. Selecting the correct breaker size will help prevent tripping because the unit will limit power draw. However, when selecting smaller breaker sizes, it will limit welding output.
To boost welding output when needed, continue scrolling and select AMP+ Mode, which has three settings: Off (the default mode), Auto Mode or Extended Mode. By selecting the Auto or Extended AMP+ Mode, Renegade VOLT will automatically supplement wall power with battery power to mitigate tripping and deliver stronger welding performance as follows:
Whether running on pure battery power (see story) or plugged into a 115V outlet and operating in the AMP+ Hybrid Mode, the Renegade VOLT battery welding machine offers the strongest welding performance in its class. You’ll get more done in less time, and that’s money in the bank.
